Sports with Sigmas

By Marco and Cooper

The top 3 most watched sports are the NFL,
MLB, and NBA, which is what this article is
about.

Baseball

Baseball playoffs are right around the coner,
and many fans intensely watch and cheer on
their respective teams. On the other hand,
athletes worldwide dream of being in the playoffs
themselves and hopefully winning the World
Series. One person who made a name for himself
in baseball was Pete Rose, a very impactful
baseball player, who just recently passed. He was
the all-time hit leader and made a name for
himself. He helped his team to two World Series
with the Reds (1975-76), and one more with the
Phillies (1980). Individually, Rose was the 1963
NL Rookie of the Year, the 1973 NL MVP, the
1975 World Series MVP, and the winner of three
batting titles.

Now we are on the most watched sport in
America, the NFL, with Jim Brown being the
player we discuss in this article.

NFL

The NFL is in season right now, and many
people are watching intensely and playing
fantasy football with friends or family. The NFL
is more exciting with new kickoffs and kick
returns where the two teams, instead of hitting
each other from 40+ yards, are now only 5
yards apart during this play. One very influential
player, Jim Brown, a running back for the
Browns in 1957 changed how football is played to
this date. He was built like a lineman but as fast
as a wide receiver. He is why so many running
backs in today’s NFL are some of the field’s
biggest and most athletic players in the sport. He
was also the first NFL player to rush for over
10,000 yards.

In a 2017 regular season match, Giants’ star wideout Odell
Beckam Jr. had a gruesome broken ankle while jumping for a
pass ending his season, and this is not rare in professional or
amateur sports. Because this occurs often, it deserves a deeper
dive into the topic.

It’s not just hardcore guys like Beckman who get seriously hurt,
it’s kids, too. Children's most common sports injuries are wrist
injuries and strains across the body. Annually, 12 million kids
between 5-22 get a sports-related injury. Contact sports like
football and lacrosse account for many of these injuries. Another
common injury among athletes is a torn ACL. This usually
happens when you make a high-speed cut or juke and the
ligament can not keep up and tears. Your knee has 4 ligaments:
ACL, PCL, MCL and LCL. If you tear one of these ligaments that
connect your knee, you will need surgery and be out for 9-12
months. This injury is widespread in pro sports but less common
among children. The ankle and foot are the most common broken
bones in sports because they are very active while participating in
sports. I have my own experience with broken bones as this year I
broke my arm while trying to deliver a pass during a football
game.

Concussions also are a prevalent type of sports injury and are
caused by a high-impact blow to the head. 20% of all athletes
who play contact sports accrue a concussion in their career and
many go unnoticed. If an athlete gets too many or does not treat
them, this could lead to permanent head trauma and damage;
therefore, it should be reported.

Baseball in Middle
School

By Landon D

Bottom of the seventh, bases loaded with two outs, and Spring
View Eagles are down by three. Granite Oaks throws the pitch,
and Mike Trout swings; it's going, going soaring over the left
field wall It's a Grand Slam! The Spring View Eagles have just
won the 7th Grade Boys’ National Championship.

This is why I think baseball should be a sport in middle school.
It would add something new besides flag football, volleyball,
track and field, cross country, and wrestling. Baseball in
middle school would also not be political because you would
have to try out for the team and dads would not be the
coaches as they are in Little League. Playing Little League is
fun but once you get to 14 years old, you cannot play
anymore; there is Travel Baseball, but Travel Ball is a very
competitive and costly sport. The average price you would have
to pay to play on a Travel Baseball team can be as much as
$3,700 for one season. The reason why Travel Baseball costs
so much is because you can get scouted and go to another
level of baseball, you get the chance to play on nice turf fields,
and the location and prestige of the team can affect the cost
of the sport. When Interviewing Ben Abbott a 7th grader at
SVMS he agreed, “Having baseball in middle school is a good
idea because some kids can't afford to pay for travel ball. And
this would give kids an opportunity to play if the school
provided the sport”.

With that being said, having baseball in middle school would
be a great opportunity for kids that love baseball and want to
play a school sport.

For hundreds of years soccer has been a fun-
loving sport for everyone. Soccer first started in
the late 1800s in England when several English
soccer teams formed the first football association.
Since its inception, soccer rules have evolved. And
one rule that has changed is slide tackling. First, In
soccer, you need to take the ball from the
opposing team to score and one of the moves to
steal the ball is slide tackling. It’s a good way to
steal the ball but could cause many injuries. Some
of the injuries that can happen are lateral Ankle
Sprain, and Tibia And Fibula Fracture. A Tibia And
Fibula is a serious injury, when you turn your leg in
a bad way which causes the fibula and the tibia to
fracture. Most of the time people are required to
have surgery because of it.

Another example on why slide tacking should be
eliminated is how frequent injuries happen just
from slide tackling. A good example of this is in a
study “in December 2010 the American Journal of
Sports Medicine, McNoe and Chalmers collected
data from nationwide to see how much injuries
happen in one season”. They found that the most
common activity that gives the most injuries was
slide tacking making up 50% of soccer injuries.
They also found out that the act of sliding tackle
had almost the same rate of getting injuries as
actually being slide tackled from another player.
To sum up it up, slide tackling is one of the best
ways to get injuries on the field.

Should Slide Tackling
Be Allowed In Soccer?

Transportation in Russia

Hello, my name is Polina and today I will tell you a lot of
fun stuff about Russian schools and what’s the difference
between schools in America and schools in Russia.

Did you know that in Russia we don’t have school buses? So,
how do students get to school if they live too far?

Since the school does not provide transportation, students
get to school either by car or on foot. They can get to
school by bus, not by a school bus, but by a public one. One
ticket costs 20 rubles (Russian currency) per each person.
One ruble equals one cent. In Russia, one can see bus stops
everywhere even in the smallest cities, villages etc. So it is
not a big problem for students to find a bus stop. People of
all ages can ride the bus. For example, if the bus driver sees
a 7 year old child paying for the ride, he wouldn’t care.

If a school doesn't have a school bus, they can just rent a
bus for trips. Two or three times a year, all classes from 1
to 11 (in Russia we have only 11 classes) go on trips. The
trip can take place in different places; for example, a
museum or a theater, etc. Trips can cost money, but usually
it’s free.

What time do people study?

We have two types of study. Early school starts at eight
o’clock. Students need to wake up at six o’clock, pack their
backpacks with all of their notebooks, magazines and even
books since Russian schools don’t have lockers. Then they
need to get to school. It could take twenty minutes on
average, but if students are late, they should say sorry and
explain why they are late. If they are mean or argue with
the teacher, she will send them to the office or give them a
bad behavioral assessment and call the parents for them to
come to school. In morning school, the end of the day is at
twelve and a half o’clock. At this time it’s really hot outside,
especially in summer. Afternoon study starts around 12
o'clock in the morning. The end of the school day is at 5
o’clock in the evening. At that time of the day, it starts to
get dark outside.

Education in Russian Schools

By Polina

We will tell you the difference between Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine schools, and American schools.

In our schools, we have only 11 grades. Every day we have a different schedule like this.

In our schools there is no such understanding of junior, middle, and senior; we have one school in which students from 1st to 11th grade study. In our schools food from 1st to 4th grade is free, and from 5th to 11th students have to pay for food. We have a mini-store in the school cafeteria, and it's called a buffet, where you can buy baked goods, drinks, and sweets.

This is my school in Bishkek Kyrgyzstan, I had a military school(Ayana’s school). What did I mean by military school? In our school, there are posters of people who fought during World War II. From grades 3 to 11 we were taught to march, we had weapons in display cases, and from grades 5 to 11 we were shown them.(We didn't shoot or kill anyone). This school lyceum is located in Ukraine in the Kharkiv region in Pesochin (Angelina’s school) A lyceum is a school where students receive deeper knowledge of some subjects; different classes have different subjects for deeper knowledge. Here is my class teacher in Ukraine and her name is Olga Ivanovna. She taught me biology(Angelina's teacher) This is my class teacher in Kyrgyzstan and her name is Alla Alekseevna (Ayana’s teacher). We are asked to learn poems 8 times a month. During tests we were told to hand in our phones and not to use calculators because it makes working with a calculator much easier. In Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine, we don't have grades in letters, we have numbers, depending on the school. In some schools it can be from 1 to 12, and in others from 1 to 5 .From 1 to 5 is NM, from 6 to 8 is C from 9 to 10 is B and from 11 to 12 is A.

From 1st to 4th grade, we have the first shift, that is, school starts at 8 o'clock, and from 5th to 11th grade, the 2nd shift starts at 12 o'clock in the afternoon.

In our countries, summer holidays last 3 months, and the last day of school is May 25. After the summer holidays, we begin the Knowledge Holiday on September 1. On September 1, the 11th grader lifts the 1st grade on his shoulder and she waves the bells.

Schools in America are very different than Kyrgyz and Ukraine schools.

On September 13, 2024, all students were in fifth period, and nothing foreshadowed trouble.
However, suddenly, a loud announcement was heard throughout the school that students were safe
and the social media rumors were not true. However, all the students panicked and started calling
their parents and telling them to pick them up from school as soon as possible.

Because too many students panicked, the school parking lot was overflowing with parents' cars.

And due to this, 307 students were picked up from the school.

Because of this, the students were told not to go to eighth period but to stay in seventh until the end
of the school day.

Let's see how the parents of the students and the students themselves reacted to this.

Our school is getting shot
up.

be safe . love you lots.

Our school is
getting shot up.

Hey! What's happening

at school?

All these messages were sent
from parents to their children
or from children to their
parents and students to
students.

Are you okay?

call me.

Now let's look at why people think this situation happened because of social media.

Many people think that this situation happened because of social media because all the rumors
about this situation came from TikTok.

People think so because TikTok can have both true information and fake news. And all these
rumors are taken from TikTok under different posts.

SVMS was never Mentioned in a threat, but other schools were rumored to be involved; however,
somehow rumored fake news and misinformation lead to SVMS being part of the rumor. Then,
hysteria happened. But, everything turned out to be quite simpler than it seemed.

Here's what one student thought about this situation.

“I think the thing that caused this situation was TikTok. I think this because people started
rumors about how the school was going to shoot up but it didn’t. All of the rumors came because
of TikTok.”

What do you think caused this situation?

Kash

I am a kid that had brain surgery at 5 years old

Imagine getting headaches that feel like a ring five sizes too small around the top of your head—squeezing, pushing, applying pressure, making your head feel like it will pop like a zit. You might not be able to relate to this, but I can.

When I was five years old I was at home with my parents and I kept getting headaches for a couple of days straight. So my parents took me to the doctors, and they put me in a machine called a MIR. It scanned my brain, and the doctor found out why I kept getting headaches and diagnosed me with Chiari Malformation. Some people might ask what Chiari Malformation is. It is a problem in which a part of the brain (the cerebellum at the back of the skull) bulges through a normal opening in the skull where it joins the spinal canal. And it still gives bad headaches. My headaches were so bad I felt like my head was going to pop like a balloon.

Before I was diagnosed, it was a long journey. Having so much pressure pushing on my head that it made me feel like I

wanted to clench my teeth and
scream as loud as I could in
hopes that when screaming,
the pain would be gone. I
would cry to my mom that my
head would hurt. She could
only give me Tylenol because
she did not think a young child
could even get headaches. I
know she felt bad when I
would tell her my head hurt,
but one day it was hurting so
badly and had hurt for so
many days, that I was
punching myself in different
areas of my head to just try
and get some relief. This made
my mom worry even more. She
was able to get an
appointment with my doctor.
She showed him the calendar
and the tracking she was
doing every time I complained
that my head was hurting. He
ordered some blood work, but
that came back normal. The
doctor told her there was
nothing wrong with me. My
mom refused to let that be the
last thing done and asked to
see a specialist.

My family didn't know how
hard it would be to find a
doctor’s appointment with a
specialist. I was only 5 years
old at the time, so I only knew
we were going to different
offices that I had never been
to before.

New Home

How it started and why

In 2021, my parents decided to move to the USA because shootings and rallies over Navalny began and the situation in the country was bad, (my brother and I didn’t know about it). A year later, on February 24, 2022, my dad called me at 6 am and said that the war had started and we urgently needed to leave Crimea (they had a flight home from Germany and I was with my grandmother then). We packed our things and called a taxi to the nearest city in Russia and drove there. When my parents arrived 4 days later, we followed the news because we were afraid for our house and that a bomb might fly into it. My parents and I went to my hometown Orenburg and lived there until June. My parents sold the house and we went to Kazan (they told me and my brother that we were going on vacation).

Turkey

From Kazan, we had a flight to Turkey. Right after the flight, everything was fine. But after we went to the food

court at the airport, I felt very bad from the smell of food that
was there. I felt bad even after we left there. There was a 12-hour
layover there and I felt sick most of the time. A few hours later,
my dad took me to the nurse at the airport because I was still
sick. I was given an IV after which I felt better. After that, we had
3 hours left and we rented a room in an hourly hotel. We slept
and went on our flight to Mexico.

Mexico

The flight from Turkey lasted 14 hours and we were very tired.
Right after we went through all the checks upon arrival, we went
to the hotel. The first city in Mexico we were in was Mexico City.
We ordered a taxi and went to the hotel. Since the time difference
was very large, it was very difficult for us to get used to it and we
wanted to sleep all the time. After a few days in Mexico City, we
had a flight to Tijuana. We were there for 5 days and then we
went to the border. We crossed the bridge and paid $1,200 per
person. We went through and all this took about 12 hours,
including the preparation of the necessary documents.

San Diego

We spent 5 days in the hotel upon arrival while our COVID tests
were checked. After that, we left there and ordered a taxi to Los
Angeles. In Los Angeles, my parents bought a car for the first time
and we went to a different hotel. We slept for the night and the
next morning we went to Sacramento. We drove for 6 hours and
arrived in the evening. We rented a house for a day for 2 weeks
until we found an apartment. After 2 weeks, we moved to my
previous apartment in Natomas and we lived there for 2 years,
after which we moved to Rocklin. August 5th was exactly 2 years
since I moved here and I am very glad that we were able to move
and stayed to live here even after many failures.

Roblox

By Makhammed

Wanna know more
about cars?

here is a great
presentation about
porche!

Roblox is a very popular game, and
most people who have never played
Roblox think that it is just a single
game, but in Roblox, there are
millions of games. There are some
good games for kids like math or
parkour. Billions of kids love this
game, and Roblox started creating it
in 2004, when Roblox finally
became public, there were only
10,000 players. Because of this,
people could only play on computers
because the first smartphones were
made later in 2007.

Who made Roblox exactly? Two
men created it, David Baszucki, Erik
Cassel, and other Roblox officials.
The iOS version was initially
released for beta testing in 2011 and
later released to the public on
December 11, 2012. The Android
version was released in the Google
Play Store on July 16, 2014, and
later in the Amazon App Store on
October 30, 2014. Erik Cassel
eventually died on February 12th,
2013. How did Erik Cassal die?
Cassel died from cancer. Hundreds
of users gathered in the Erik Cassel
Memorial to mourn the death of the
legend himself. Many of these people
dressed up as Erik Cassel's
character to pay tribute to him.

I love Roblox because they
give us so many fun games,
and people can play and enjoy
it. You can start developing
games on Roblox Studio and
make money and it can go
viral. And Roblox gave them
money: you can make your
game and be an owner, but
it's actually really hard to
develop games. It costs at
least a hundred dollars to
upload a game.

Roblox has 79.5 million daily
active users worldwide. An
increase from 65.5 million
daily active users in 2023.
The number of Roblox daily
active users in 2024
increased by 52.3% compared
with 2022. Still, Roblox is a
thriving game even after its
2024 downfall. Roblox has
come out with new games and
newer updates since then. One
of the more famous games
was Rocket Arena. One of the
most popular games of 2024
is Town RPG and the biggest
and most played Roblox game
is Brookhaven. It already has
50.26 billion players.

Scribner's School Snacks

By Alex

School lunches have undergone significant changes over
decades, including nutritional scientific advancement and
changing educational policies. Early on, school lunches were
primarily focused on providing sustenance with meals mainly
consisting of carbs and proteins. The emphasis was quantity
rather than quality. This approach was driven by economic
factors, particularly during WW2. Awareness of childhood
obesity and nutritional-related health issues increased in the
’40s and the National School Lunch Act was established, with
guidelines that aimed to improve nutritional quality, amend
meats, and add policies such as the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids
Act 2010. This act sought to refine these standards with the
inclusion of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and low-fat dairy
options.

Because of this, schools began collaborating with nutritionists
and dietitians to make lunches that met the appropriate
guidelines. This shift highlighted the importance of nutritional
health and the correlation of academic performance.

Even though school lunches are big contributors to child
obesity, they are not the only factors to consider. The levels of
child obesity have significantly gone up since the 1960s,
hitting a peak of 6% in 2012 with severe child obesity levels.
After 2012, the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act was made, this
implemented not only healthy lunch options but also healthy
breakfast items. Studies show that if kids eat a balanced,
healthy breakfast, they perform better academically and are
more active throughout the day. Although this has helped
obesity levels go down, there is still more kids/families can do
outside of school to promote healthy living. Recently in 2024,
schools have added a family healthy weight program that
ensures that kids are active outside of school. With the help of
this program, both kids and parents can establish healthy
eating routines, including healthy choices for school lunch and
breakfast.

With the implementation of the
Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act,
the fat levels have gone from
50 grams to less than 0.5
grams. The high number of 50
grams of fat was due to the fact
that in 1970-2010 there were
fast foods inside of school
cafeterias. With healthy food
knowledge and awareness
guidelines, schools across
America, including Spring View
Middle, are giving healthy
options such as salads, fruits,
and vegetables to their
students.

Over the decades, school
lunches have improved and
gotten healthier options which
is helping childhood obesity go
down by the day. I think school
lunches still have a lot to
improve on even though they
have gotten better. They can do
this by encouraging kids to eat
fruit and vegetables if they are
eating a less healthy option like
pizza or mozzarella sticks.
Another way I think schools can
improve is by adding a time, like
a break, where students can get
a healthy snack from the school
cafeteria. With all this
considered, people can work to
be the healthiest version of
themselves.

Can social media be helpful or
dangerous?

By Elisabeth Moy

Did you know more time spent on social media can lead to
cyberbullying, social anxiety, depression, fear of missing out,
and many more things? According to Does Social Media Use
Cause Depression? - Child Mind Institute people who spend the
most time on Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms were
shown to have a substantially higher rate of reported
depression than those who spend the least time. It's true, that
due to the fact that kids compare each other negatively on
social media, people lose self-esteem which can cause
depression for some people. However, social media may be
dangerous but it can also be helpful with helping people keep in
touch.

Imagine you've moved far away from a friend or family member.
Well, you’d be able to use social media to contact them. In
addition to that, social media can help with many things:

  1. If you were maybe traveling you could just do online
    learning,

  2. You’d be able to just go on social media if you're looking for
    people with different job skills,

  3. Social media can tell you everything that's happened on the
    news,

  4. Social media has lots of entertainment so if you are bored
you could just use social media,

  5. If something happened, you would be able to quickly access
    information about what's happening.

These are just a few examples of what social media can do.

Even though there are positives, the disadvantages of social media
outweigh them. Here are some disadvantages that social media has

  • due to people giving negative feedback, it could cause
    depression for some people,

  • the idea that you might miss out on stuff if you’re not online can
    affect your mental health,

  • cyberbullying can cause people to commit suicide,

  • people get Less sleep due to getting distracted and scrolling on
    social media,

  • social media sometimes has Misinformation which can cause
    problems,

  • while doing homework you might receive a text and look at it
    and get distracted,

these are just some examples of what social media can do.

According to “CBSnews.orga,” a 5-year-old committed suicide due
to cyberbullying. Additionally, during a Friday at the Spring View
Middle School, there was a rumor that there was going to be a
school shooting, and it was mainly caused by a social media post on
TikTok spreading fake news. Additionally, according to
Social media
brings benefits and risks to teens. Psychology can help identify a
path forward it states “Research shows that online bullying and
harassment can be harmful to a young person's psychological well-
being”, After all these things that social media can cause, I'd say
that social media can both be helpful and dangerous, but mainly
dangerous.

Stuck in the Middle

By Avan Estrada and Ysak Draculan

Why do middle school students “dislike” or “hate”
middle school? Well, the amount of pressure to
exceed academically in-class activities can cause
stress among middle schoolers.

Middle school students struggle during middle
school for one of three reasons. One reason is
when they are unfamiliar with other students
around them, it’s hard for them to interact.
Making new friends can be stressful and hard for
many students, especially if they don't know
anything about anyone. They might be concerned
if being someone's friend is the right decision or
not. Another reason students may struggle in
middle school is that they can’t keep up with their
classes and disorganization occurs. Lastly,
changing from class to class can be difficult for
some students as well. When it's the first day of
middle school, you might not know where to go
next. It can also probably cause embarrassment.

Have you ever got a C- or a B+ on one of your
tests or exams? Grades like these can affect you
significantly either mentally or physically. Some
middle schoolers think that as they ascend in
school, tests given out to them will get

more difficult or complex.

Continued on page 12

The transition is a big change
that no one will prepare you for.
You'll have to learn fast;
otherwise, you have me. I am
writing this article to teach you
and give you my “Spring View,”
on what I’ve learned about high
school from high school students.
Since this article was designed
for Spring View students, I focus
on two high schools, Rocklin and
Whitney High. Unfortunately, I
didn’t have enough time to
include Del Oro. However, I’ve
surveyed multiple high school
students, and they had some
very interesting things to say.

In every school there are
teachers; this is no surprise.
People always like some teachers
more than others because
teachers care about being liked.
No one wants to work so many
hours a day around people that
don’t like them. However, there
are those teachers who don’t
care and just want to get on
with it. From the survey, there is
no definite answer to whether
you are more likely to get likable
teachers.

Transition from Middle School to High School

Rocklin Vs Whitney

BY Joseph P

VS

To be honest, all the high school
students sound very chill. When it comes
to their opinions on whether the people
who go there are different, the common
theme is they don’t know, they're the
same, or Rocklin is better. Another
common theme is that everyone seems
to stick with one group instead of
having many different friends.

Now, it's time to answer whether
Rocklin or Whitney is better. I haven’t
been to either school. Most say that
Rocklin is better, but Whitney is
described as newer and nicer. It has a
good VAPA program and good fine arts
and theater productions. Meanwhile,
Rocklin has a better STEM program, a
better football team, and the best music
and band classes. Now beware more
people from Rocklin or Whitney could
have submitted a response. Disclaimer:
I’m not biased; I’m going to Whitney.

Now for a short topic: academics. I’ve
never done high school academics.
General classes can vary between easy
or medium difficulty depending on the
person. AP classes are hard, but not
impossible. The schedule is very
complicated compared to middle school.

If you go to Rocklin, your
schedule will vary from day to
day. If you go to Whitney, just
know that a block is another
word for whatever period class
you have for that time.

Now something else that was
mentioned in some of the
responses that I didn’t think
about, is that some of them
mentioned upper and lower
classmen so I’m assuming that
people in higher grades are
liked more than freshmen. This
always happens at Spring View,
but you won’t be the
upperclassmen this time, just as
a warning.

To conclude, high school has
quite a few differences but not
ones that you can’t learn and
figure out on the go. Whether
Rocklin or Whitney is a better
high school depends on your
personal preference. Thank you
for reading….

Brown was a three-time MVP and eight-time unanimous All-NFL
selection. Known for his powerful and elusive running style, Brown led
the Cleveland Browns to the NFL title in 964. He averaged an
astonishing 104.3 rushing yards per game and is the only player in
NFL history to average over 100 rushing yards per game for his
career. In 1984, Brown told the New York Times, “Lacrosse is probably
the best sport I ever played.” Yet, he is also known for organizing one
of the most important meetings of athletes during the tumultuous
1960s.

Here is the NBA, the third most watched sport in America, with Kobe
Bryant, a very inspirational and influential player, as the main topic.

NBA

The NBA season has come and fans are excited to see their teams
start a new year and hopefully win. With top prospects making their
rookie debut, to teams up on their toes, you never know what you are
going to get going into a new season because there are new players,
coaches, and fans that can change the game. One very influential
player, Kobe Bryant made many charitable donations, including in
support of the National Museum of African American History and
Culture. Kobe continued to be an all-star, even off the court, until his
tragic death on January 26, 2020. The physical peak age for most
NBA players was around 30 years of age but with Kobe came a
different view. He opened the way for future NBA stars by showing
that he could dominate even after the 30s. He used creative thinking
skills that saw him produce top-notch performances. Bryant had been
selected fifteen times to the All-NBA First Team and twelve times to
the All-Defensive Team. Bryant won the All-Star MVP award four
times (2002, 2007, 2009, and 2011), and won the NBA Slam Dunk
Contest in 1997. Bryant earned a name for himself by displaying his
incredible work ethic and leadership skills. He is considered one of the
best basketball players of all time. While playing, he was a four-time
MVP and 18-time All-Star and won five NBA championships.

This concludes the three most watched sports in America

An example is Antonio Brown who was
a very successful football player for the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Still, after many
undiagnosed concussions and hard hits
to the head, he developed CTE (
Chronic Traumatic encephalopathy).
This disease is created from repeated
concussions and traumatic head injuries
which leads to loss of ability to think,
mood problems, and eventually could
lead to dementia. If you get a
concussion, there are symptoms like
headaches, slurred speech, and inability
to think properly.

However, there are ways to prevent
these injuries including strengthening
muscles, taking breaks, and using
proper techniques. Staying hydrated is
also very important to avoid strains
and cramps across the body. Also,
strengthening bones like consuming lots
of calcium can reduce the chances of
breaking bones. Ways to help a
concussion are to rest and hydrate and
not participate in physical activities. If
you take these proper precautions and
wait the time out of physical activities,
you are more unlikely to have a
concussion ever again.

Last year, the NFL realized that people were getting
injured from kickoff and kick return, so the NFL has
decided to change the kickoff and kick return rules so
people could stay safe. A kickoff is set at the start of the
game and also when a team scores. Although after a team
scores, there is a chance to get points after a touchdown,
which is a field goal. During kickoff, the returning team
has 11 players behind the 40 yard line, and when they
receive the ball after it is kicked, they can run for more
yards from when they catch it. The NFL has recorded four
times the amount of concussions coming from kickoff and
kick return because of players colliding at high speeds. This
new hybrid kickoff that the NFL has installed also
encourages returns; last year the return rate was 22.1%
which is the lowest in history. With this install, the new
return rate is 70.5%. This is beneficial because they can
play the whole season instead of being out with an injury.

Also, they changed it because of how fast the players are
running toward each other and huge collisions and injuries
such as broken noses and severe head injuries happen,
which can lead to brain damage or memory loss. For
example, Nico Collins got injured and he didn't play for 4
games and will be returning November 10th when they are
going to be facing the Detroit Lions.

This is Nico Collins, the player that sadly has gotten a
head injury during the new NFL season. He is 25 years old
and plays for the Houston Texans; he is number 12 and
they guy is a wide receiver.

Brain Surgery Story
Continued

I remember meeting a doctor that we had to drive far for, he
told my mom that he could only order imaging since the blood
work came back normal. He did not think they would find
anything on the images because I was a healthy kid on paper.
The imaging we had to get was done at a hospital because I
had to take sleepy juice “- anesthesia -” to get me to stay still
in the MRI machine that uses radio waves to take pictures of
the inside of the body. My mom said it was very loud, luckily, I
was asleep. But she said she had to wear earplugs, and it still
was like sitting next to a passing train using its horns. Once
that was done, we had to wait again for the images to be read
and for another appointment to discuss what they saw. The
doctor who sent us the images stated that I only had excess
pressure in my head because of spinal fluid building up on the
back of my neck and base of my brain, but he said as I grew
the body would absorb it. My mom did not feel good about that
answer and asked if there was a way for a neurosurgeon to
review the images. The doctor seemed frustrated that my mom
would ask for a second opinion.

I was in the car with my mom when she took the phone call
from the surgeon. She cried out, “I knew it!”

Shortly thereafter, we were having an office visit with the
surgeon “shortly after the phone call.” with “Once we were at
the office,”I mostly played with the toys they kept in the
drawers on the beds in the doctor's office. Then the Doctor
pulled up the images of my brain and drew more pictures so my
mom understood what he was telling her. After that meeting,
everything seemed to move very quickly.

We were driving far away and staying in a
hotel. The night before the surgery, I got to pick
my dinner, and I picked ice cream bubble gum.I
had to check into the hospital very, very early in
the morning, and I got to pick a smell for the
mask they were going to use over my nose. I
picked a watermelon. I don't remember much
after that, other than eating a lot of grape
popsicles once my surgery was over. After the
surgery, my headaches did not completely go
away, but I have less and they are not as bad as
they used to be. My mom is good at making sure
I take care of myself. We found out the hard
way that doctors do not like it when you
question them, at least the doctors that we were
seeing. There happened to be a neurosurgeon
that came to the office we went to, that would
review all images taken. I remember being with
food, water, and sleep to make sure I didn't
make the headaches worse.Once I was released
from the children’s hospital to go home, the real
healing started. I finally had relief from the
severe headaches. My mom was my advocate
fighting for me with the doctors who did not
want to treat me because on paper I was a
healthy kid. Disabilities cannot always be seen.
The pain of a squeezing ring on my head finally
subsided and now I only get a few headaches
here and there, mostly because I am dehydrated
or did not eat enough food. The only other
lasting effect I have from the pain is the 8-inch
scar I have on the back of my head.

Stuck In The Middle
Continued

SVMS Opinions

We asked a few of our peers and one of our teachers
about their opinions on middle school. We asked 2
questions: “Why do you think middle school students
dislike middle school?” “Why do you think middle school
students struggle?”

Most of our peers answered that middle school students
dislike and struggle in middle school because “students
might have a lot of missing assignments and homework
which could probably stress out students.”

Others said, “...you're always stressed..” and ”pressure of
the grades.” One of our teachers said a few reasons why
students may struggle or dislike middle school might be
“...because it is a huge change in academic and social
expectations” and “changes they go through can be
awkward and uncomfortable, and sometimes students can
feel embarrassed.”

Although many students might find middle school
stressful, some might “...find it refreshing after
elementary…” but some students could find the change
scary or even embarrassing.

My Students Rock!

This publication was created by students in periods seven and eight of the Eagle
Exploration Elective. They did their own research, writing, interviewing, podcasting, and
video recording.
They put a lot of time and effort into this publication, which is Spring
View’s very first.
I would like to thank all my students for their dedication, and I would
especially like to thank Eli R. for his editing and layout of this publication.
His
knowledge and willingness to learn and take risks made this all possible.

We look forward to our second edition.

Look for it in late November or early December,
